How cold is it in Edmonton?

Edmonton is a northern city, so there is no doubt Edmonton winters are a little long; however, most Edmontonians embrace the weather by bundling up and participating in winter activities. Snowboarding, downhill and cross-country skiing, hockey, and skating are all great activities to try out during the winter months. Or you can take in any number of family-friendly activities all winter long during the Winter Light Festival.

The average winter temperature is -15 C with highs reaching up to 0 C and colder temperatures of -34 occurring approximately 3-4 times per year. Best to snuggle up on the couch with some hot coco on those days! The fall and spring, however, are mild – the average temperature in October is 5.9 C and 4.9 C in April with moderate precipitation.

Summers are another story entirely. Summers in Edmonton are perfect for outdoor activities with temperatures averaging around 20 C and highs reaching into the high 30s. The summer sun sometimes seems to never set with daylight hours stretching as long as 17 hours!
