A Day I Will Never Forget
By Deserae Kehler
Edmonton is home to the most memorable day of my life!
My husband and I had dated for 5 years before getting engaged 2 days before he left for basic training. It would be another 2 years plus before we settled in our new rental in Lancaster Park, a.k.a. Edmonton Garrison.
Our life in Edmonton has always been bittersweet. We finally got married on November 17, 2007. It was far from the happiest day of my life. My husband was training out of town during ALL of the planning. Did I fail to mention that I was 5 months pregnant? With no family in Alberta, I turned to my co-army wives for support.
Somehow we made it to the big day. Hooray—right? Wrong. At 8 AM I get a call from my bridesmaid claiming I ignored her yesterday at rehearsal and she was not going to stand by me today. Now short-handed, I leap into action to try and stay on schedule. Not even close. I arrived at the ceremony in sweat pants—at the exact time I was supposed to be walking down the aisle. |
Little did I know that this would not be the climax. Remember that my husband was not involved at all in the planning of this event— he actually hasn’t even seen where we were to be wed. So naturally being new to Edmonton, he gets lost. Considering all the groomsmen are from out of province as well, it takes them 3 hours to find us!
How did he eventually find it? Someone at the wedding told him he could see a low flying Boeing 757. Since Alan could see the same plane, he used it to navigate his way!!
The ceremony was beautiful. But we weren’t able to take photos as it was too late and the dance floor at the reception was pretty dead because dinner was also late!
Oops!
So maybe it wasn’t the best day of my life, but who else in Edmonton has a wedding story like that??? It’s certainly a day I will NEVER forget!
