One Small Step

By Lalaine Quinto

I applied as a nanny here in Canada and ended up in a farm in Fallis, Alberta. I have relatives and college friends living in different places in Canada and, compared to those cities, the place where I was living in is boring. But then I received a phone call from a cousin who's living in Edmonton. I got excited and moved on after my contract.

I'm working now as a staff member in one of Edmonton's accredited daycares. I love the kids, their parents who are always so friendly, and the places we go for field trips: the Valley Zoo, Fort Edmonton Park, the Legislature, etc. There are always places to go and things to do, especially during summer. I would just keep on coming back every year.

The most memorable thing happened when we went to the Alberta Aviation Museum. A photographer took a picture of my two year old son, Ayrton dressed up in pilot's gear. He was featured the next day, June 25, 2007 in Edmonton Journal with the title "One Small Step."

I took one small step at a time enjoying life here in Canada, particularly in this city. I have a family, a home, good neighbors and I know my son's future will be fruitful because of the famous U of A.

One thing more, Edmonton the City of Champions remind's me of my grandfather's nickname "Champ!"
