Coloured Lights
By: Cora Falacinski
I remember the first time I came to Edmonton during the holiday season—we were driving from the airport and all the houses were decorated with coloured Christmas lights…it seemed like all the houses had lights, and lots of them!
I moved to Edmonton five years ago to be with my husband Matt—a Canadian whose parents emigrated from Poland. I left Germany in 2006 to write my thesis in Edmonton alongside Matt, who at the time was also in school completing a civil engineering degree. Soon after, we both began working for PCL Constructors Inc.
Some of my first days in Edmonton include memories of the city’s natural features. The landscape here is spread out much more than the cities in Germany and you can see so much of the sky that it seems to stretch on for miles. I noticed right away that there were lots of trees in Edmonton—the city is very green. This was a unique change from what I was used to.
In addition to the geography, I, like many other Edmontonians, like to celebrate the city’s cultural diversity. You can get any kind of food you want—Edmonton has such a diverse population that if something exists, you can find it here.
Now, after being in Edmonton for almost five years, I find myself undertaking a new adventure…parenthood. Matt and I became parents last year to a beautiful baby girl. While I have only recently returned to work from a year of maternity leave, I still am able to find time to make every day count with my daughter. We enjoy going for walks every day and being a parent has really changed my outlook on life.
