The Jackrabbit Made Me Do It
By Rebecca Szoladi
I resisted years of my brothers hounding me to move to Edmonton, the "land of opportunity." December 27th, 2008 I finally caved and came out here to give it a shot. I had been in Penticton, BC for 10 years of beautiful weather, good friends and fun, and a whole lot of getting-nowhere-in-my-life. I left it all behind and came through blizzards and a LONG drive into one of the worst winters in recent history.
I got a crappy job, had no friends, and it was -35. I was miserable and really missed the Okanagan weather and the life I'd had there. I slipped into a depression and wondered what the heck I had done to my life by moving to this godforsaken place. I told myself I’d give Edmonton 6 months.
Then, one night I saw my first jackrabbit. What a goofy looking creature this was! A far cry from the cute little BC bunnies I was used to seeing. I thought of how out of place that jackrabbit would be if he was in the Okanagan, and it made me laugh. I decided then and there to just do my best to make a life for myself here. If that jackrabbit could survive here, so could I.
Now, 7 months later, as I sit here in the great place I just bought, enjoying the hard-earned summer heat and knowing I have a great job I never could have had in Penticton, am surrounded by wonderful friends, and live in one of the most diverse cities in Canada with anything I could want for restaurants, entertainment, and places to go see, I know I made the right choice! The jackrabbit made me do it.
