Outdoor Culture
I'm one of the directors of the Edmonton Outdoor Club. As directors, our jobs include organizing outdoor events from time to time, member issues, organizing volunteer meetings and trying to make any changes people want to see in the club.
I arrived here in March of 2006 and have enjoyed discovering the city and surrounding areas through Club events ever since.
I was born in Victoria but I'm a geologist so I've worked all over the place. The most recent place was St. John 's, Newfoundland, working with the government as a geologist.
I like Edmonton because it has lots of opportunities to do outdoor things like walking through Mill Creek Ravine on my lunch hour because it’s so close to where I work. It lets me give my dog a good run instead of just letting him out in an off-leash area.
I wanted to get back out West, where people like to do outdoor things. That's how I ended up here. Western Canadian culture involves more variety in terms of outdoor activities. I didn't want to go home to Victoria though because there’s not enough snow there. If you want to do outdoor stuff and it's raining that can be a problem, but if it's snowing it doesn't curtail the activity at all. You just put on a toque and go.
