The Bay of Canola Fields
By Tanya Edison
When I first moved to Edmonton on a work-related transfer, I was a little disappointed that I would be so far from the Atlantic Ocean. I wondered how my daughter would fare seeing as though her favourite place to visit was the boardwalks around Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. About 2 years passed and I was longing for the feeling that standing on the shores gave me. I took many drives around the city and to areas just outside Edmonton with the hopes of finding that feeling again. 11:45 on a warm August night returning to the city from St. Albert, I found it.
I pulled over, turned off my car and stared out into the horizon. The endlessness, the openness, that feeling of no limits lifted my heart and waves of content swept away my doubts. Now, home has become Edmonton, my city on the bay of canola fields. So, whenever I miss the ocean, I take a short drive just down the highway, see where the earth meets the sky and dream of the endless possibilities a person can have anywhere in the world if they just look for them.
