Hippie Family

By Patrick O’Reilly

Born into the constant traveling life of a hippie family, I had experienced much of Canada prior to the age of 10. Quebec had an air of history, Ontario a taste of multiculturalism, Manitoba had a feel of music, Saskatchewan was good ole farm country and British Columbia was stacked with outdoor treats...and Edmonton, Alberta, encompassed all of the above!

Recently I met a traveler from London, England, who was seeking out the best place to grow roots here in Canada. I made it my challenge to show "Darren" exactly why he could consider Edmonton as his only option.

From the rich history seen and experienced within Fort Edmonton Park, the many festivals showcasing the diversity of Canada like Heritage Days and A Taste of Edmonton to the inviting sounds of the Folk Music Festival and Blues Festival, I came to realize that Edmonton was an excellent microcosm of Canada. Even ranching and farming is evident in the Edmonton culture. It's so easy to go hiking, riding, walking, jogging or running in the many parks which are conveniently located within the city. Edmonton is also conveniently located smack dab in the middle of some of the world’s best skiing and is a stone’s throw away from dinosaur adventures or glacier escapes.

It was with great joy that Darren decided after 3 months in Edmonton to define himself as an Edmontonian migrant. He currently is finalizing his paperwork back home as we all wait patiently for his return. Through my explanation of what it is to be an Edmontonian, I have come to realize just how much I love this city!

Cheers to all who feel the same, and may the rest all move to Calgary. :D
