Coming Home

By Kristi Tencarre

How did I end up in the Edmonton area when I grew up near Vancouver, BC? I admit there are times when I miss the ocean and green of the rainforest, but the constant sunshine is a bright reminder of why I love this area of Canada.

I have lived overseas and visited 51 countries. I have seen how people in other places live. This has helped me to know exactly what I want in my home city. I want the peacefulness of the country within close proximity to the amenities of a large city. The Edmonton area offers exactly that.

It's the wide open spaces. It's the cumulus clouds that blow across the blue sky in the summer. It's the prairie grasses, yellow canola as well as green and purple alfalfa that sway in the breeze, much like ripples on the ocean. It's the freedom of space. It's the small town feel of Stony Plain with the big city of Edmonton only a half hour drive away. It's the best of both worlds: the country and the city.

Back in Vancouver, it's typical to be in your 30s, working a good job, and still renting a basement suite. My pre-approved mortgage qualified me to buy a small one-bedroom condo there. If I wanted to buy a house, I would have had to move at least an hour (and that's not in rush hour) outside of downtown Vancouver, where I worked. Here, I can buy a house out in the country with acreage!

In Edmonton I can also find all the ethnic foods that I enjoyed in Vancouver. Driving the wide highways around Edmonton to do my shopping is pleasant compared to the constant traffic jams of the Lower Mainland. I am using my world experience and travels to open the eyes of the country youth here where I teach.

While Edmonton has a downtown core, it is not crazy busy like in Vancouver or Toronto. We have all the same amenities here and world-class restaurants, so it’s not like we're lacking. Vancouver has the reputation of being a "no-fun" city, while Edmonton is a city of festivals! A Taste of Edmonton and the Folk and Fringe Festivals are summer highlights for me, as is the St. Albert Farmers' Market every Saturday.

I like the peace I've found here. Watching a storm blow in, listening to the thunder rage, and then observing the lightening flashes across the grand expanse of sky is something I could not do with the small glimpses of sky in the city or the grey drizzle that settled in for days at a time. Seeing the northern lights from the comfort of your own home is amazing. Chasing twister clouds across the prairie is thrilling.

I've backpacked in Patagonia and I actually prefer the Canadian Rockies. Jasper and Banff are short drives away for me now and I can camp and hike to my heart's content.

I've come home.

I've never been to Edmonton but your article makes me want to travel there and behold its beauty as described by you. The countryside sounds so serene and the city life so accessible! What a great Ambassador you are for your new home and a loss for Vancouver...

Reminds me of our first years married living on Whyte Ave and wishing we lived out of town for all your reasons but still loving the activities of downtown. And I loved to watch the skies during a storm. Thanks for the reminicing!

For those of you who’ve never been to the Edmonton area, it’s truly an adventurous place to explore and even more amazing place to live. In fact, my fiancé and I drove through Edmonton many years ago while on a camping vacation and as circumstances now have it, we’re expecting and living in the Capital Region! There is so much to do and see that we're still finding new things after being here one year!

The heavenly Father who watches over the sparrow especially knows the times and places where His children will find peace and contentment. He gives the desires of your heart. He is obviously smiling over your new life in Stony Plain. So, from your Maple Ridge friend who has found the same things here in the west in a different landscape - keep shining in that Edmonton sunshine! As they say, "It's all good!" Great story.

Dany Heatley and the rest of the NHL should read this article! I've lived here all my life and you have described this city perfectly! I have been all over the world and have not considered calling anywhere else 'home'. Thank you for the beautiful story!

I've been to Edmonton many times, and time and time again, it impresses my with the huge variety of amenities within the area. I can relate to the comment about the festivities! I have competed at Vegreville Ukrainian Dance Festival four years in a row. I am excited for my next visit. West Edmonton Mall is next! Thanks for the encouraging story, Kristi! God Bless

Thanks for summing up so well! The summer views of canola, flax and alfalfa are prairie favourites of mine as well.

it was the wheat fields and the wide open sky that drew me to the edmonton area. i have the shopping i desire -the great West Edmonton Mall, the famous Whyte Ave., ethnic strolls and smaller communities surrounding Edmonton with their unique looks and farmer's markets, each a little different from the others. The river valley with it's walking and bike trails is lovely in summer and fall, and winter paints a crisp, snow-sculpured landscape. whether it is in the almost unending sunshine, under the rustling leaves of the great cottonwoods and birch, or in front of a fire watching the snowstorms blow outside, there is a peacefulness and a slower pace in this area that is just good for the soul.

A beautifully written article, Kristi! As someone who was born and raised in Vancouver, lived in Edmonton for six years and recently moved back to Vancouver, I can appreciate the beautiful landscapes, conveniences and affordability that Edmonton has to offer! So true!

Mike - I'm glad there's enough of us that love this area. Thanks for your encouraging words! Emily - we should compare our pictures sometime! Linda - It IS all good :-) Dorothy - you should write out your story for this site! You're very poetic. Dee - too bad you still don't live here; we could take another pottery class! :-)

I grew up in Toronto & now live in a small town in the Ottawa Valley. You have described quite lyrically the spirit of life in a smaller community not too far from an interesting city! And I agree w/Mike that Danny Heatley will miss out on a great city and area if he does not end up in Edmonton!
