I Was Leaving For Good
By Darlene Marchuk
Eight years ago I was leaving Edmonton for good. I am from northern Alberta and had lived in Edmonton for approximately 14 years. It was time to go back to where my heart was. I was quite content in the country although I would miss Edmonton occasionally. The people here are extremely friendly and I had made a significant amount of friends that I chose to leave behind. My children were here as well.
In 2002 I became deathly ill. My entire world turned upside down and I found myself in palliative care at the University of Alberta Hospital. The specialists, the other doctors and the nursing staff made my 6 months there bearable. I had the best doctors available and they saved my life.
Today my life has taken yet another turn, for the better this time I must say; with tons of support and help from the awesome people of Edmonton, I have now returned to school and have just finished my first year of college. Only 3 more years to go and I will have a degree! At 46 years old this is something that I take immense pride in. Without all of the help and support of fellow Edmontonians I would not be where I am today.
Thank you Edmonton, and the amazingly wonderful people I have met.
