In the Blink of an Eye
By Nashtassia Esteban
Time goes by so quickly. In just the blink of an eye, I can’t believe it's been a year or so since we moved to Edmonton. Life can be so quick you don’t notice how much you've grown. But I must say: I'm lucky to have lived in Edmonton.
I was 19 years old when we immigrated to Edmonton from the Philippines last year. I didn’t really approve of moving, because I was already settled in our country. I loved living there. I had my friends there and the kind of life that I wanted. But then we received the letter saying our VISAs were approved. It took 7 years to get approved, so it would've been a waste if we didn't go. Plus, my parents are still aiming for a better life for us.
Living in a first-world country is such a blessing to me. I've had a lot of opportunities that have made me more responsible for the things I do. I became more disciplined and motivated to advance myself and my needs and wants. I met very good people that showed me how to adapt in a city that is so fast-paced. Suddenly, in the blink of an eye, I loved the city of Edmonton.
I never thought I would meet such good people here in this city. My longing for home was lessened because of my friends here. They always show me that this city offers you a lot of good opportunities that can make your life more productive and successful—and all the while you're having fun.
I know it's just been a year, but I am already thankful for Edmonton for all the blessings we have here and I'm hoping that our family will still prosper and be strong and overcome all obstacles. With Edmonton, I know we can be a one big happy family.
