Once Upon a Time, in a Land Far Far Away...

Meet 5 Edmontonians who attended the International Day of Sharing Stories. On this day, people from diverse backgrounds came together in City Hall, sat down in small groups, called story circles, and shared their stories with each other. The group then helped each of its members come up with different ways of sharing their individual stories.

In the video, you’ll meet:

Councillor Amarjeet Sohi, who immigrated to Edmonton from India in 1981;

Hamid Tookhee, who immigrated from Afghanistan to Edmonton in 2008 and learned English at the Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers;

Renee Vaugeois, who is the executive director for the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights in Edmonton;

Sylvia Hoang, who was born in Canada, but whose parents came to Edmonton from Vietnam; and

Xiaodong Gu, a reporter and mom who emigrated from China to Canada and has learned English, also at the Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers.

The video includes excerpts from Xiaodong and Hamid’s stories. Read the rest of Xiaodong's story here, and the rest of Hamid's story here.
