Jasper Magpies
By Caitlin Bauer
I consider the magpies of downtown Edmonton to be companions of sorts.
Spring, summer, winter, or fall - the little pranksters can usually found dipping and weaving like feathered kites down the city. I’d watch them to pass the time while I waited for my bus to arrive. I’d watch them while I walked down Jasper Ave with a Timmies coffee in hand. I’d watch them build their nests before I could smell the soft hint of spring, and for some reason never tired of it. I know these birds are often annoying – they pester pets and wake suburbanites in the early morning; but there is something about the magpies, I realize, that reminds me about the people here in Edmonton.
They’re a tough lot to survive the winters, and they never miss a second of the good weather.
Let the good times fly.
