Life, Hockey, and Bugs

Cam Somerville, 11 years old, on life

When I grow up I want to be a writer. Fiction. I really look up to Edmonton writer Marty Chan. I’ve read every single one of his books and he came to our school. He went to my friend’s school too. He goes to all kinds of schools. He’s really good at getting in the community and informing people about his books and just kind of being there, which is nice. He came to our school and he got us all to write stories about how it’s a normal day until something completely bizarre happens. It’s really fun to hear some of the other students’ stories.

On hockey

I play right wing. I like always being there in the play when it’s in their end, and I like just hanging around in front of the net and having 2 or 3 guys come over me and try push me off the puck while they’ve got their other guys scrambling around trying to make a play.

On what he found in the river valley the other day

I was just picking up all sorts of things that I could look at under a microscope and some of them were pretty interesting. I found coyote’s hair, an owl pellet, and moss. I also collected some water with bugs in it and looked at the bugs under a microscope. All you could see was their outline and quite a few dots and then they started blowing up.

Where Next?
