Spring 2005

By Kristen Finlay

In the spring of 2005 my family had a difficult decision to make. We had lived in Fort McMurray for many years and we were considering making a move to Edmonton. I was hesitant because I was very active in the Fort McMurray theatre scene. I worried that I wouldn't find a place in theatre in Edmonton. I could not have been more wrong! The move to Edmonton was the best thing to happen to my “theatre life.” In the first year I acted in ELOPE and Walterdale Theatre productions.

I also wrote my first grown-up play and had it produced on Walterdale's stage. I have connected with a variety of the local community theatre. All are welcoming and friendly and eager for people to join their ranks. This led to my being able to perform in the Fringe and directing community and independent productions. I have continued with my playwriting and have found the Edmonton theatre community phenomenal in its support for those who want to participate. Walterdale does seem to be my home-away-from-home. After just 3 years I am now the incoming artistic director. Four years ago I never would have believed this would be what I was doing. It truly feels right!

Walterdale Playhouse is Edmonton’s longest-running community theatre run entirely by volunteers.

Chris Cook is the blonde-haired young man with glasses, Jan Streader is the woman in the black beret, Justen Bennet (sweatshirt & red t-shirt) is the Vice President of the Board of Directors, and Sarah Van Tassel is the brunette in the black-framed glasses.
