Subtle Aspects
By Ryan Madej
Having grown up in Edmonton and lived here my whole life, I've learned what I love the most about this city is what it’s not in comparison to other cities of the world. Edmonton is not about pretension or blatant self-advertisement.
It's more about the subtle aspects, like the river valley that I've often walked through on summer days, or drinking a chai late at night over a game of chess at Naked on Jasper. Yet in saying all that, one of my favourite memories of Edmonton is sitting in Gold Bar Park a day after I returned from New York City and realizing that I'm very lucky to breathe cleaner air, revel in the glory of silence, and even see the odd hare or squirrel run around me and know that I'm home.
Edmonton is that place on the Prairies where I still hear the whistle of the trains in the distance at night and the passing of Canada geese overheard in the fall while I look at the orange and yellow colour explosion around me. It’s that place I'll always find beautiful because I know it so well, and a place I know I could never turn my back on for a minute.
