The Other Oil in Town
By Barbara Biro
Trying to find something my family can do together is challenging. My kids are 7 years apart, so an activity or event that one likes, won’t be age appropriate or of interest to the other. Justin stays busy attending his lessons at Sung Lee Taekwondo and North Edmonton Gymnastics Club. Then there's Courtney. Dance lessons, volunteering at St. Michael's Extended Care and now, a part time job at Northlands. As you can imagine, we are going in so many different directions, it's hard to get together as a family. We've tried going our separate ways, to accommodate our kids' different interests, but a few years ago we came upon the answer! We started attending Edmonton Oil King games.
WHL Hockey is a great way to spend an evening watching exciting, high calibre hockey in a kid friendly environment.

Justin loves to get the players’ autographs during intermission and we always have to stop and have his picture taken with Louie, the team mascot on his throne. Courtney on the other hand, enjoys the top 10 music played during the game and the chance to score some great Oil Kings’ swag that is randomly tossed into the crowd. But most of all, my husband and I like the price! And of course the time we spend together as a family.
I plan to spend some time this summer with Justin at the John Janzen Nature Center, and with Courtney starting work at Northlands, I'm sure I'll be spending a bit of time there (picking her up and dropping her off). But right now, we're enjoying being together, and I think 'The Other Oil in Town' just might take the championship.
