Three Gentle Men

By Elise Vanovermeire

I moved to Edmonton in 2001 from Saskatoon to come and live with my dad and finish high school. I always had this feeling like there was something or someone very important here, so I decided it was what was needed to be done, even though I was leaving all my friends back in Saskatoon. My dad used to take me to Second Cup every Monday for coffee. There was a guy that worked there and we always seemed to be making eye contact with each other. I had this weird feeling that I just had to meet this guy. Just talking to him for a short time every time I saw him was making me feel like I've known him forever.

Not too long after I decided it was time to get a job, and hey, while I was at it, why not try to get a job at that Second Cup? I could possibly get the job and get to know the guy working there! I applied and later that day I got a call from them wanting to give me the interview. It made me giggle because it was the guy I liked calling to interview me and also the fact that he called the same day. I ended up getting the job and could tell that this guy was also into me. I was only 16 and he was 21 so he was scared (which I guess I can't blame him)!

He was always a gentleman and drove me home after work because he didn't want me walking alone at night. One night just before I got out of the car, I leaned in and kissed him. It was the best kiss I have ever experienced in my life and I ended up leaving the car stumbling over and said, "WOW". He ended up asking me out and we got married in July 2007 and had a baby boy September 2008. I love both of my boys very much, and if it weren't for Edmonton I would never had met him! So there is my story of why Edmonton means so much to me, and other things of course!!!
